The use of plants and flowers have a
long standing tradition in folkloric medicine. This series of 38
preparations made from wild flowers and plants is called after its
originator, an English physician named Dr Edward Bach. Bach thought
inner disharmony and negative feelings are the basis of physical
ill health and was convinced that flower essences could be used
to lift a person's spirits allowing the body to heal itself. On
the basis of this, he classified various moods into seven categories
and then subdivided these into 38 negative feelings. Each is treated
by a particular remedy eg. aspen for apprehension, wild rose for
apathy. Rescue remedy, which is made of 5 different essences, is
perhaps the best known and is used to treat severe shock.
