Lichen Planus

Lichen Planus is a chronic condition of the skin and mucous membranes, typically the lining of the mouth, where it can resemble mouth ulcers. It is thought to be caused by a virus and has some features in common with other skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis. Sores on the skin are often localised on the wrist and ankles but can more widespread.

The following advice can help in the treatment of this condition:

  • Eat plenty of the following:
    • oily fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, Oily fish are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin A which are great for healing mucous membranes and skin tissue
    • Beta-carotene, in the form of carrots, green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, apricots, and mangoes
    • Zinc-rich foods - nuts and seeds
  • Foods to avoid:
    • Sugars, refined carbohydrates, and concentrated fruit juices
    • Acidic foods such as tomatoes, pineapple, mushrooms, coffee, red meat, chocolate
    • Sour foods such as vinegar, pickles and spicy foods such as chillies
    • Dairy products
  • Useful supplements:
    • Vitamin A heals mucous membranes - take 20,000iu a day for up to 2 months, but avoid if you are pregnant.
    • Take a good quality multivitamin and mineral
    • Take extra Zinc - up to 30mg a day, as this helps in wound healing and maintaining a healthy immune system
    • Anti-virals - Echinacea, liquorice and St John's Wort. Take internally or apply topically to the affected area. St John's Wort is a herbal anti-depressant and should never be taken with sedatives or prescription anti-depressants
  • Other Recommendations:
    • Try getting some exposure to natural sunlight - as this has been shown to significantly improve this condition. However don't overdo by sunbathing in strong sunshine
    • As stress can exacerbate this condition make sure you get plenty of rest and consider taking up a relaxation exercise
    • Avoid soaps and washing detergents that irritate the skin
