Indigestion
Indigestion is an umbrella term
for discomfort of the upper abdomen or stomach, usually after eating.
It is also known as Dyspepsia or acid stomach.
Symptoms include heartburn, belching,
hiccups, nausea and flatulence. Persistent problems with Indigestion
may be due to a peptic ulcer or liver, gallbladder or pancreatic
disease.
The causes of Indigestion range
from indulging in too much rich, spicy or fatty food, excess alcohol,
eating too quickly and eating unripe fruit. Pregnant women can suffer
from Indigestion because their intestines are pushed up into
the thoracic cavity causing reflux (acid flowing back into the oesophagus).
Stress, anxiety and unresolved emotions
can also cause Indigestion.
Tip: certain herbs are helpful
in relieving Indigestion - slippery elm for healing mucous
membranes, peppermint for soothing and aiding digestion after a
meal, and dandelion taken before a meal to enhance digestion.
