Hypoglycaemia
Hypoglycaemia is a defect of
carbohydrate metabolism where the blood glucose (sugar) level reaches
levels lower than normal.
Symptoms include faintness, nervousness,
irritability, cold sweats, fatigue, dizziness, emotional problems,
trembling, blurred vision, lack of concentration, cold extremities,
fatigue, nausea, indecisiveness, crying spells, convulsions and
hyperactivity.
Symptoms are usually episodic and are
related to the time and content of the previous meal. It can come-on
mid-morning, if prone, if breakfast is missed. The symptoms can
be quickly alleviated by eating.
When choosing foods it is wise to choose
"slow burn" foods such as complex carbohydrates and protein, so
as to provide a steady source of energy to prevent blood sugar from
dropping rapidly.
Foodstuffs which cause rapid drop in
blood sugar include refined carbohydrates, sugar and caffeine, and
should be avoided.
Tip: Chromium, a mineral contained
in animal protein, can be taken in supplement form (100-200mcg)
as it has been shown to play a significant role in balancing blood
sugar.
