Diverticular Disease

Diverticular Disease is a condition in which there is abnormal out-pocketing of the lining of the gut through its muscular wall. These out-pockets are known as diverticula. Occasionally there may be inflammation of these diverticula, so-called diverticulitis.

Diverticular Disease usually affects the lower part of the colon and has been linked to a lack of fibre in the diet - this is a particular problem in countries of the western world.

Diverticular Disease is often symptom-less. However, if inflammation occurs it is usually closely followed by pain in the lower abdomen, bloody diarrhoea and fever. Complications include strictures, gut obstruction, perforation and peritonitis.

If diverticulitis is prolonged then abnormal fibrous connections may form between the gut and other structures in the abdomen, including the bladder and vagina. These may subsequently become infected and need treatment.
