Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea - runny, watery stools
and sometimes explosive bowel motions. Diarrhoea can have
many causes.
It can be caused by food poisoning,
gastroenteritis, dysentry or a food allergy. Prolonged or repeated
bouts might be due to Crohn's Disease
or irritable bowel syndrome, or more rarely bowel cancer. Excess
Vitamin C, Magnesium, stress and anxiety can also cause Diarrhoea.
A short attack of Diarrhoea is
not serious, but a prolonged attack can lead to loss of essential
salts and water, leading to dehydration. This can be life-threatening
and must be treated immediately especially in children.
Tip: if travelling in a hot country
where the likelihood is that you might pick up a bug or suffer from
Diarrhoea always carry sachets of electrolyte powders which
can easily be made up with water to re-hydrate immediately thus
avoiding the health threatening problems of dehydration.
