Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is the inflammation
of the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the front of the eye
and the internal surface of the eyelid.
The conjunctiva appears swollen and
red and these changes are accompanied by a discharge which is watery
and contains pus. Both eyes are usually affected and there is considerable
discomfort. Vision is rarely affected, however the discharge may
cause the eyelids to stick together.
Typical causes are viral infections,
bacterial infections and allergies. Other causes include chemical
and physical irritants. The infection usually clears within two
to three weeks, but in the case of bacterial infection may be helped
on its way by a course of antibiotics - both as ointment and eye
drops preparations.
Rarely the Conjunctivitis may
be prolonged, in which case the cause is most likely to be due to
a chlamydial infection. In this case antibiotics will need to be
taken for at least one month.
