Colitis
Colitis is a disease almost exclusively
of civilised nations - put in the class of ailments called "civilised
diseases". This stems from its main causes which are dietary and
lifestyle in origin - a refined diet, sedentary lifestyle, and stress.
The symptoms of Spastic Colitis
are: abdominal pain, abdominal distension, cramps, gas, constipation,
diarrhoea, and mucus.
With Ulcerative Colitis
the symptoms are: attacks of bloody diarrhoea, cramps, blood in
stool and mucus. Ulcerative Colitis is more likely
to occur after a bout of intestinal flu.
Colitis responds to lifestyle
changes: high fibre diet, drinking plenty of fluids, daily exercise
and stress management techniques.
Tip: Slippery Elm, a herb described
as a demulcent, is excellent as a treatment for Colitis as
it helps to heal the mucous membranes of the colon.
