Bulimia NervosaBulimia
Nervosa is an eating disorder. It is an advanced form of compulsive eating.
Bulimics binge on large quantities of food - usually carbohydrates - and then
purge themselves by vomiting and taking laxatives to keep their weight down. Bulimia
Nervosa affects three out of every 100 women. It is believed that it may be
triggered by biochemical imbalances - such as bingeing on carbohydrates to raise
serotonin levels (the feel-good neurochemical). Other experts believe that bingeing
relieves psychological tension, but is followed by feelings of self-loathing,
hence the need to purge. Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa include binge eating,
secretive behaviour, menstrual disturbance, dehydration, poor skin condition,
sore throat, and dental problems due to repeated vomiting.
