Bowel Cancer
Bowel Cancer is thought to arise from the presence of polyps
- common benign tumours that develop from colonic mucus. A third
of us have such growths and 5% of those will become cancerous.
The causes of Bowel Cancer are unclear although diet and
stress are implicated. The symptoms are most commonly: rectal bleeding,
although this is usually harmless and might indicate something harmless
such as piles. Rectal bleeding in those over 60 should always be
investigated, as the incidence of bowel cancer increases with age.
Other symptoms without bleeding include: unexplained anaemia, with
or without tiredness, a lump or mass in your abdomen, and severe
abdominal pain in the older age group.
Tips for Prevention: make sure you eat a low-fat, high fibre
wholefood diet. There is evidence that eating vitamin-rich cruciferous
vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, wholemeal and wholegrain
products, pulses and fresh fruit could reduce the risk of Bowel
Cancer
Diet and Supplements
Eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Fibre - both vegetable
and cereal - along with 2 litres (about 8 glasses) of water a day
- helps to stimulate the bowel to rid itself of waste products.
Cut down or eliminate red meat and dairy products and replace with
oily fish which contain beneficial essential fatty acids. Control
your alcohol intake and cut down on sugar, salt and spicy food.
Try to keep your weight at a reasonable level as obesity is implicated
in the development of bowel cancer.
Exercise
Exercise helps keep the bowels active. Try to do at least 30 minutes
aerobic exercise 3 times a week followed by a relaxation exercise
which helps to relax the muscles of the bowel wall and reduce the
deleterious effects of stress here.
