Bladder Cancer
Bladder Cancer usually presents with the symptoms of recurrent
urine infections (frequent passing urine, burning sensation on passing
urine, fever) and/or blood in the urine. There is rarely pain in
the early stages.
This cancer is particularly linked to smoking and exposure to chemicals
used in the rubber industry (e.g. betanaphthylamine). In the UK,
bladder cancer is rare in people under the age of 40, and is four
times more common amongst men than amongst women.
Investigations typically involve microscopic examination of a urine
sample for tumour cells; x-rays and scans; and cystoscopy - direct
visualisation of the interior of the bladder using a telescopic
device.
Treatment in orthodox medicine is primarily surgical and the form
the surgery takes depends on how much the tumour has spread. For
instance, a localised tumour, without spread, may be treated by
removing it. A tumour which has spread widely, however, may require
removing the whole bladder in some cases. Surgical treatment may
be supported by radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
