"GPs can now book complementary
therapy appointments for their patients online, using the UK's first
centralised booking service for qualified complementary health practitioners.
The internet-based cyberspacehealthclinic.co.uk is aimed at both
at patients and GPs. The initiative has been welcomed by Maida Vale
GP Dr Rob Hicks, who also practices acupuncture. He told GP "I
have a lot of patients who ask for complementary therapies and my
primary care group is looking into what money is available to provide
more complementary medical services". GP Dr Jeremy Sims, who
is involved in the project, said: "This overcomes the problems
of finding properly qualified therapists."
Founder and Director of cyberspacehealthclinic.co.uk
and complementary healthcare specialist Dominique Radclyffe said,
"As the site has been founded and directed by health professionals
our aim is to give access to the best and most reliable complementary
health services available". All the therapists listed by the
service are registered members of the relevant professional bodies,
have professional indemnity insurance, and have at least two years
practice experience, as well as excellence in training and qualifications.
They also have a comprehensive health encyclopaedia of health conditions
and complementary treatments, a Q&A section, features, health
news, and much more including the search facility identifying therapists
by location and speciality and the centralised booking service".

Interview with Dominique Radclyffe
Cyberspace Health Clinic co.uk's founder and director
by Elinor Malcolm - logon4london
Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey can lay claim to being one of the last century’s groundbreaking films, but in the case of Dominique Radclyffe, it packed a life-changing punch. Taken to see it by her father when she was six, she still recalls it as "a defining moment": the small Dominique discovered an awe and fascination with the way life and the universe work, a curiosity about "making connections" which subsequently coloured her entire career – not least of all her latest, unique venture. Combining the limitless communication potential of the Internet with traditional complementary medicine, the Cyberspace Health Clinic has made an impressive connection between ancient wisdom and modern ways of disseminating information.
Her career route has been a suitably colourful one, given Dominique’s – literally – universal range of interests. Yet, like any true achiever, she combines her curiosity and vision with pragmatism and the desire for knowledge based on experience – as she explains: "I’ve always wanted to be proactive. I’ve had an idea; given myself the training in order to facilitate the idea; then gone ahead and done it."
The daughter of a doctor, she grew up "always around medicine and very aware of health in general". Her father, evidently a strong influence, used to quote to her: "The job of a doctor is to amuse the patient while nature cures the disease!", inspiring in her a fascination with how people are responsible for their own well being, both mentally and physically. This led to a degree in psychology and work within consumer psychology, but medical matters also beckoned. She began training in complementary fields: yoga and nutritional medicine, including three years’ study of Ayurvedic healthcare.
Never one to sit comfortably on the corporate payroll, in the early 1990s she launched her own stress management consultancy. Simultaneously, she was working with the Hale Clinic as part of its core Medical Directors Team and becoming instrumental in its establishment as the first and most prestigious centre of its kind.
Her ultimate goal, however, had always been to set up her own clinic – to be "the umbrella person overseeing all the connections". The Internet was the ideal answer. She had the inspired idea for a virtual reality clinic and, two years later, had achieved it.
It was two years of astounding creativity and hard, hard graft. Dominique wasn’t making any compromises: this was going to be the definitive on-line guide to complementary health and natural medicine with a rock-solid database including – true to her rigorous standards – only fully screened practitioners and qualified medical advisors: "Before, most people found practitioners by word of mouth. But now, with 75% of the UK population wanting access to this kind of information, not everyone will know someone who can recommend a therapist. We try to apply vetting procedures above and beyond what you’d expect." Amongst the stringent requirements for inclusion are excellence in training and qualifications, full membership of recognised professional organisations, minimum two years’ post-qualification practice and full professional indemnity insurance.
And Cyberspace Health Clinic's medical team is equally impressive. Dr David Smallbone and Dr Jeremy Sims bring decades of highly qualified experience to the site; the famous Barefoot Doctor is guest editor; and other advisors include award winning health writer John Cooper, homeopath Dr Rajendra Sharma, nutritionist John Goodge and occupational therapist Anna Radley. Thus anyone seeking advice can be sure they’ll receive honest answers from trustworthy specialists.
The question of forging a mutually beneficial, mutually trusting relationship between orthodox and complementary medicine is at the heart of Dominique’s vision. Pragmatically, she accepts that it’s going to take some time. There is still a deep-rooted sense of superiority in Western medicine’s view of complementary treatments, even those such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, which have thousands of years of proven history.
The facts are that GPs are faced with increasing numbers of patients seeking reliable information about complementary treatments and currently they’re not equipped to give that advice – no matter how much they might wish to. Dominique hopes that the Cyberspace Health Clinic will facilitate that process, with its rigorously vetted directory helping to overcome "the perceived lack of quality control".
We’ve a long way to go before practices which have helped to keep mankind healthy for thousands of years are safely and knowledgeably incorporated into our Western ways of medical thinking. The demand is there; doors are opening and, in the meantime, Dominique Radclyffe’s Cyberspace Health Clinic is making a huge contribution to forging that vital connection. Her father should consider the cost of that cinema ticket long ago money very well spent.
