Ayurveda is the major traditional
healing system in India and has been in existence for about 4500
years. It is a sophisticated, comprehensive system of health, similar
to the other great oriental healing systems such as Traditional
Chinese Medicine. Ayurveda covers all aspects of health
and encourages physical mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.
The cornerstone of Ayurveda is that well-being is affected
by "prana" and the three doshas or "vital forces"
- Vata-Air, Pitta-Fire, Kapha-Earth, which fluctuate and need to
be brought into balance. When we are suffering from ill-health the
doshas are said to go out of balance and the Ayurvedic practitioner
can help to re-balance them and bring the body and mind back into
a state of health.
