Whooping Cough
Whooping Cough is a childhood
disease. Caused by the bordatella pertussis bacterium it attacks
the mucous membranes that line the airways. The illness can last
up to four months and can be extremely serious.
The symptoms are fits of violent coughing,
punctuated with a characteristic "whoop" as the child inhales. The
illness begins with fatigue, catarrh, sneezing, sore eyes, mild
fever and coughing. The coughing can become so severe so as to cause
nosebleeds, burst blood vessels in the eyes, vomiting, blue lips,
fingers and toes.
Antibiotics may be prescribed if the
illness is diagnosed before the coughing starts. A vaccination is
available to be given in the child's first year, which is 60-80%
effective.
