Stress
The body's reaction to Stress
is called the "flight or fight" response, a physiological mechanism
designed to help a person confront difficult, fearful or dangerous
situations. When the body is faced with a stressor it prepares to
either "stay and fight" or "take flight" by pumping out chemicals
into the system.
The problem is that in the modern world,
stressors, far from disappearing, are often persistent and carry
on putting demands on the body and mind (eg. money worries, Stress
at work, relationship difficulties), outstripping the person's ability
to deal with them, and ultimately, potentially, leading to a state
of exhaustion. In these instances Stress is experienced,
and eventually burnout if it is not dealt with appropriately.
The symptoms of Stress include:
aching and tense muscles, diarrhoea,
constipation, asthma,
headaches, skin problems, migraines,
insomnia, frequent
colds, anxiety, fear, depression,
anger, irritability, hostility, lack of concentration, impatience,
mood swings and tearfulness.
There are many ways of dealing with
Stress, and many of them work by initiating the Relaxation
Response, which counteracts or decreases the Stress chemicals
circulating around the body, eg. breathing
and relaxation
techniques, meditation,
and physical exercise, or try to get to the root of the problem
and discharge it through the talking therapies.
Tip: 20-30 minutes of aerobic
exercise 2-3 times a week is a powerful antidote to Stress.
Endorphins (feel good chemicals) are released and the stress hormones
adrenaline and cortisol are decreased.
