- m - n Parkinson's DiseaseParkinson's Disease is a chronic, slowly progressing degenerative disease of the central nervous system. It is characterised by impairment of movement, muscle weakness rigidity, tremor, an unsteady shuffling gait, and an expressionless look on the face. The first sign is usually a hand tremor at rest, which disappears when the hand is purposefully moved. Muscle cramps and pain often occur. Parkinson's is caused by the degeneration of basal ganglion nerve cells that produce dopamine - a neurotransmitter which is responsible for the smooth movement of muscle control.
