Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis or "brittle bones"
occurs when the bone density is reduced, resulting in thin, weak,
and porous bones. The bone becomes thin due to loss of Calcium,
causing persistent backache, in the neck, rib, and hip area, The
back gradually becomes stooped reducing height.
The causes of Osteoporosis are
varied and include: the menopause when oestogen is no longer produced
(oestrogen has a protective effect on the bones), excessive dieting
and Anorexia Nervosa where calcium
is leached from the bones, Rheumatoid Arthritis, lack of
exercise and lack of sunshine (Vitamin D is essential for the utilisation
of Calcium)
Tip: Weight-bearing exercise
has a significant effect on enabling the body to make use of calcium
and build bone mass. Choose from aerobic exercise and weight training.
Diet and Nutrition
- Both Calcium and Magnesium are crucial in off-setting the
onset of Osteoporosis, combined with weight-bearing exercise.
Magnesium is important to promote normal bone mineralisation.
Vitamin C is essential for the proper formation of cartilage,
Vitamin K for attracting Calcium to the bones, Vitamin D to
help Calcium to be absorbed from the diet, and Zinc for tissue
and bone repair.
- Take a good daily multi-vitamin and mineral supplement with
extra Calcium and Magnesium (1000mg Ca: 500mg Mg), and at least
500 mg of Vitamin C daily taken separately. Increase intake
of Calcium and Magnesium-rich foods: oily fish with bones, dark
green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, cottage cheese, avocados,
bananas, whole grains.
