Obesity

Obesity is defined as being at least 20% overweight. It is common in developed countries and is a major health risk, especially if fat is distributed around the waist (apple shape) as this is associated with heart disease. If more calories are eaten than burned they are stored as fat.

Occasionally, Obesity caused by a hormonal imbalance such as Hypothyroidism, is hereditary, or is related to depression (comfort eating), but in far the majority of cases it is due to eating too much and not taking enough exercise.

Caution: do not follow a strict diet for long periods without medical supervision, and fasting is not advised as a means to weight loss.
