Gallstones
Gallstones are pebble-like lumps,
made of Calcium, Cholesterol and bile pigments, which can develop
in the gall bladder, an organ near the liver. The gallbladder stores
bile - a thick, bitter liquid made by the liver - and supplies it
to the digestive system where it helps break down fats.
Gallstones occur in up to 10%
of the population in the Western world, and are linked to a low-fibre,
high fat diet. They are more common in those people who are suffering
from obesity, diabetes, and pregnancy. The condition if often hereditary.
The symptoms of Gallstones are:
abdominal pain, bloating, wind and nausea.
Gallstones do not cause problems
unless they block the flow of bile. In this case they can be broken
up by ultrasound, dissolved with drugs or removed by surgery.
Tip: regular intake of extra
virgin oil may help prevent the formation of Gallstones.
