Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition in which there is
wasting of the muscles of the wrist and hand, tingling and pain.
It is the result of compression of one of the nerves controlling
the muscles of the hand, the median nerve.
This compression may be the result of any cause of soft tissue
swelling - including pregnancy, the
menopause, arthritis
(in particular rheumatoid arthritis), gout, and raised thyroid hormone
levels (hyperthyroidism).
The pain may worsen at night and may involve the thumb, index finger,
middle finger and ring finger. It usually has a burning quality
and those affected may find some relief by raising the affected
hand above the head or by soaking it in cold water. Sufferers may
notice that the pain increases when the hand is extended. .
