Addison's Disease
A disease of the adrenal glands, which
are pyramid-shaped organs which sit above the kidneys. The adrenal
glands produce vital hormones: corticosteroids (eg cortisol) and
mineralocorticoids (eg aldosterone). In Addison's Disease
the adrenal glands are unable to produce sufficient quantities of
these hormones.
Typical symptoms include weakness,
apathy, weight loss, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and menstrual
disorder. Sufferers may show increased pigmentation of the skin
in the creases of the palms and in their mouths. In addition, there
may be acute drops in blood pressure on standing, leading to black
outs.
80% of cases have no known cause.
Of the remaining 20%, many are of auto-immune origin - abnormally
the sufferer's own antibodies are driven to attack his or her adrenal
glands. The overall outlook for this disorder is usually good provided
there is adequate treatment. This treatment will be required for
life.
