Coeliac Disease

Coeliac Disease is caused by gluten - a protein found in whole grain cereals such as wheat and rye - damaging the intestinal walls, thereby making nutrient absorption difficult. Sometimes it is called Wheat Intolerance, although genuine Coeliac Disease is a more serious problem.

Symptoms include bulky stools, diarrhoea, weight loss, bloated abdomen and fatigue.

Although it generally starts in childhood, adults who get it suffer from depression, infertility, skin problems, mouth ulcers and constipation.

Coeliac Disease can develop after a bout of gastroenteritis or it may be hereditary.

There is some evidence that it can develop in response to bottle feeding - breast milk probably allows the baby to develop protective antibodies.

Once the problem has been diagnosed a lifelong gluten-free diet will be recommended with vitamin and mineral supplementation to counteract the problem of malabsorption.

Tip: Papain, a protein-digesting enzyme found in papaya, is often prescribed by naturopaths to help de-activate the gluten in wheat.
