Arthritis
This
is the most common form of joint disease occurring in 80% of people over 50 particularly
in women after the menopause. In osteoarthritis the cartilage that protects the
ends of bones at their point of contact degenerates, and bony outgrowths may form.
The symptoms range from mild pain, stiffness, swelling and "creaking" to total
loss of joint function. In severe cases the surrounding muscles may waste and
the bones may distort. Osteoarthritis tends to strike the large joints that bear
weight such hips and knees as well as small joints in the feet, hands and fingers
and the vertebrae in the neck and lower back.
Tip:
gentle exercise such as swimming or yoga will strengthen the muscles supporting
the joints without putting too much pressure on them.
